Itโ€™s the least fun social platform, but the most important for your career. Hereโ€™s how to make LinkedIn work for you.

While LinkedIn is the central hub of online professional networking, it can also be an overwhelming and confusing place. But your digital persona is more important (and necessary) than ever, so you should probably get good at LinkedIn: How should you think about your profile and activity on LinkedIn, and why is it important to prioritize your time on this platform?

Innovation Editor Christine Liu talks to Madeline Mann, a human resources leader and host of โ€œSelf Made Millennialโ€ on Youtube, who explains why LinkedIn matters, how to maintain and grow your network, and how best to use this platform for personal and professional growth.

What do you think of LinkedIn? How do you actually use it? โ€”Christine

  2. I enjoyed your video and your energy.
Thank you for this explanation ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒท

  3. These comments sound like theyโ€™re from people who watched this video because they fail at their careers

  4. It is a useless tool for job seekers. It does NOT make it easier, personal branding makes you less desirable to employees, I will not put my unfortunate face out there for all to see. I also don't have "awards and success stories" like everyone seems to have. Way to bash my confidence social media! DELETE.

  5. I agree about the 'puffing one's self up' part that is annoying. I use it to message people I only have a business relationship with and to keep with up colleagues professionally, who I wouldn't be keeping up socially. Plus. for my connections, it is a good way to hear about upcoming events, conferences, etc.

  6. yo if you dont wnna be on it or asking why that on u lol linked in dont need u anyway noob…

  7. The funny thing is I got a LinkedIn ad before this video started๐Ÿ˜„

Christina is absolutely awesome! Professional, eye ๐Ÿ‘ candy ๐Ÿญ the audience definitely connects; and the camera ๐ŸŽฅ loves this woman! Looking forward towards more epic videos

  11. So, what is the point of linkedin?

  12. One of the best videos I have watched in a long time! I appreciated your openness and they way your video presented the information, not like a class or tutorial but as you and I having a conversation about what the heck is LinkedIn! Thanks you! Subscribed and looking forward to more great content.

  13. Problem with LinkedIn is if you donโ€™t need an employer you will have recruiters out of the Ying Yang but if you actually need a job, they overwhelm the requirements and the recruiters play games.

  14. So no one gonna mention the dark circles under her eyes? that's just something that family only can talk about? Really?

  15. Well how about us freshies.

    Helpful video, thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

  17. How can linked in get away with discrimination? Why have a photo required? Why be able to know what the person looks like and not what they can provide?!

  18. I never understood the point of linkedin and never had an issue with finding a job without it.

  19. It has little use worrying about platforms and how people use it. People who need to prove themselves are always loud and obnoxious. Online, on the street, in the restaurant, in the store. But people who are in control and know where they are heading, are calm, steady and determined. The more you feel the need to engage and battle in superficial posts about appreciation, work ethic and morals, the more that tells me you are an annoying opinionated insecure employee who needs to compensate for their lack of skills. On my profile you will find only the most necessary information. A summarized portfolio with my experience. If companies look for more pieces of flair, I don't want to work there anyway.

  20. linkedin has be come a platform for political views and spread trump big lie

  21. Madeline Mann is full of crap. LinkedIn is a waste of time.

  22. I still feel I need help with my LinkedIn. But think video was helpful. ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. There is no professional usage of LinkedIn – it's a cesspool of ridiculous meme posts and Instagram-type attention-seeking crazies. It's actually a good indicator of who not to hire.

  24. Boycott Linkedin, a vile and corrupt organisation.

Linkedin is going on a mass banning spree against Western people IN THE WEST!

My 600 follower account was banned for putting up a 2min video of Fauci and crook Michael Milken.

Also for putting a link to Robert Malone.

Linkedin is a cesspool and rotten to the core!

It should be closed down and its snr staff jailed.

  25. LinkedIn 2022=Facebook 2012

  26. And there was thinking it was the place to dump my whole career history but then use a resume to refine the story. One job is all I found on LinkedIn…ever

  27. Unpopular opinion: LinkedIn is more fake and toxic than Instagram.

  28. I found fake graphic design jobs on LinkedIn and I tried to talk to a lot of my connections about collaborating or something, and I simply get ignored. It's a waste of my time. So many people just kept on sending me connection requests and it just started to get annoying. I just deleted my profile. I don't care for it anymore.
It was like another Facebook. ๐Ÿ™„ Wasting my time seeing people put their successes on there. It started to make me feel depressed and I kept on comparing my life to others.

  29. I no longer work…well I stay home with the kids, so I no longer get paid to work (nor raises, nor promotion, nor recognition from spouse)…so I find it fun to comment on the many non-business/career related articles, etc. I also periodically visit a random profile just to see if they come look at mine.

I honestly can't see the point of the site as far as helping my career.

  30. Sometimes rarely linkindin works fir example

Some hr reach me and offer Japanese translation job
In TCS j thinkni don't remember

But unfortunately I only know basic level Japanese and I not learned language in any institution as they asking fir which level am I currently

  31. LinkedIn was halfway decent before it became Facebook for "professionals". Now it's nothing more than a social media platform for validation.

  32. Hello,
I am trying to create a buyer persona. What is the best wy to do it?

  33. no.. i waited for you in 2020 to finally learn what to do with it. ohhh thank you master !!!
muhahahahaha … really, step down a little yes.. you're just a youtuber, nothing more. take it easy sweetheart we've been there done that a million times before you even thought about it.

  34. Oleg Braginsky is the guy

  35. Let me tell you something HBR, LinkedIn is incredibly toxic and garbage. There I said it.

  36. My company forced me to make one but that's it. ๐Ÿ˜’

  37. ๐ŸคกLinkedIn is surveillance capitalism and part of the social monitoring/credit apparatus being constructed.

  38. Linkedin is basically Facebook for professionals. As I minimize my need to social media I realize having a profile to find a job and network is not only time consuming but also exhausting; trying to promote yourself to people you don't know so they can "hook you up" for a prospective career doesn't sit well with me. And many times many of them are just there to sell something to you. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I would rather meet face to face with an employer in an interview and get to know the company that way, besides doing research beforehand so I know what I'm getting myself into, and will help me decide if I want to work there. Hence, I deleted my LinkedIn account. Not a necessary tool for me.

  39. Privacy is the #1 reason I don't use LinkedIn. Besides the fact it's another way for Microsoft to spy on you, do you REALLY want the whole Internet to know where you work? LinkedIn is a doxer's paradise.

LinkedIn is also a tool for employer's to discriminate against candidates. If you don't have a profile picture it's considered "sketchy".

  40. when did job hopping become desirable? if you had 15+ jobs the one thing you are not good at is working. the only thing you do is get up and leave your post for yet another hit of interview.

  41. We need a replacement for LinkedIn

  42. LinkedIn is pointless, and to be honest if a prospective employer asks me for it, they lose points. It is a complete waste of time and – in my experience – not a place serious people waste their time.

  43. Yes. A terrible platform and easily possible to fake

Never had very conclusive and relevant outcomes on this platform.
It is just another place and opportunity for the people to show up and just promote themselvesโ€ฆ.

  45. I just dumped my LinkedIn account. I finally decided to assert that all those self-aggrandising, pretentious, banal posts are not worth my time.
Edit: I'm autistic, and I become overloaded by too much input. Plus I detest the NEVER-ENDING vertical scrolling. It's a terrible UX and it forever trades on one thing: "but you might miss that golden job opportunity".
Even if that were true (and I don't believe it for a single second), my wellbeing comes first!

I have 80 connections on LinkedIn. Most of them have sent me a connection request.

I have had like zero things happen from any of them. I do not understand what the point of it is if no one does anything. It's like when 2 people like each other but there both to scared to make the first move.

Like, ok? Is anything going to happen here or what!?

  47. LinkedIn is the biggest circle jerk in the world

  48. I like the simple and straightforward manner in which you provide information, and would like to do something similar. My work has been long-form video in the past because it did not require video editing. This is not my area of expertise, but I recognize how important it is today. As an executive coach and group facilitator, this could potentially demonstrate leadership. The HBR branding attracted me to your work because I am a graduate of OPM 28 (1997-1999).
