Tsedal Neeley on Why We Need to Think of the Office as a Tool, with Very Specific Uses 2022

January 18, 2023

HBS professor Tsedal Neeley specializes in how companies can scale, go global, and achieve digital transformation. She thinks the future of work is not going to be a choice between in-person, remote, or hybrid. You need to “be fabulous in all of them and learn how to connect with people and work well with people” in order to achieve your goals, she says.

She is the author of “Remote Work Revolution: Succeeding from Anywhere” (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BLLQDZG/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1), and is co-author of the forthcoming “The Digital Mindset: What It Really Takes to Thrive in the Age of Data, Algorithms, and AI” (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099KQLCWY/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1).

This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. We've studied in real time how Covid has changed Business and we're prepared for the leap to hybrid and remote Leadership.

  8. Dear Adi, dear Tsedal,

Such a great conversation!!! Thank you so much. Indeed, viewing the “office” as a tool rather than a destination is a very profound idea. And surprisingly, Professor Tsedal, after sharing her insights, humbly ask Adi “Does this make sense”. A teacher, reverting to a student mindset. Skill (insights) and Value (teacher shifting to student mindset). 2 truly remarkable takeaways!

In Soka Gakkai Buddhism, life is a mission not karma. A mission to awaken lasting happiness in oneself and others. Just as the office is an enabler, a tool to invigorate us to realize victory and happiness, so are life’s vicissitudes. Thus, I find Professor Tsedal Neeley’s viewpoint as very profound. Thank you HBR especially all the behind-the-scenes team supporting Professor Adi. Thank you, Unisys (the sponsor of this episode). And thank you YouTube. Thank you all for these 2 great takeaways.

This is the second episode where the word “metaverse” was prominently mentioned. The first one was in Prof. Reid Hoffman’s episode. I presume, with all due respect, this must be the “in” thing now in tech stocks.

Looking back, in the 1990’s, it was just “internet”. Right after the turn of the millennium, it evolved into the “internet of things” flavored by the financial market crash. And now in this pandemic it’s “metaverse”. Still enhanced connectivity. Will these “evolution” of connectivity prevent future market crashes? Or perhaps diminish the threat to humanity of climate change? Or hopefully dismantle all nuclear weapons? Anyhow… I will not go down this path again. Just like my comment about Artificial Intelligence or AI eons ago (that filled me with regrets later because I may have offended a lady leader), please accept my sincere apologies.

Respectfully talking about technology or metaverse, perhaps near future tech, like the CPU (mouse and monitor included) will be probably reduced into the size of a FitBit smartwatch. 1.25inch x 0.50-inch dimension. As light as a feather. It will exceed the SSD storage speed, RAM and graphics power of the most advanced gaming laptop today for starters. It’s wearable. As a bracelet, necklace, or belt buckle. If our technological direction continues. Yet this is still very primitive.

We are capable of far greater things than that. For example, allow me to cite just one passage of the principle- the 6 Difficult and 9 Easy Acts: “(3) to kick a major world system into a different quarter with one’s toe; (Lotus Sutra 11th Chapter- Treasure Tower). The frontier of biological science future, in terms of human lifespan is 10,000 years. We can hop through all the goldilocks territories of our universe and probably beyond.

A single human life is the equivalent of not just 1 universe but multiverses, not just a mere metaverse. Each life possesses enumerable, billion trillion kalpas of past lifetimes. What technologies, what worlds (advance or primitive), did it saw and stored? What challenges far greater than ebola pandemics, climate change, supernovae did it overcome? Before it emerged again today. What can this single treasure tower called the ordinary human being, gift us in our time of need? Perhaps what we imagined today as our future technology, were just actually a replica, an approximation of what we’ve already created before in our previous lifetimes. So much for cycles, recycles and technology talk.

Just as a tiny weeny hypothetical wearable thing can be the probable “portal” of transparent high-definition computer monitors and mouse projected on the wall of Notre Dame Cathedral or tables respectively, so ca a single human life become the “portal” of advance technologies, whose primitive beginnings we are just about to experience in the near future. If we peacefully unite as one family and specie. And yet when we emerge in this planet, in this life, we came naked. With only hope and purpose as our “enablers”. And through the millennia, we as a specie, overcome. We conquered this tiny planet. In each of our genes is stored the greatness of each ordinary human being.

The 6 difficult and 9 easy acts principle, beckons us to seize that future. We protect each other compassionately as sovereigns to one another. Nourish each other as parents to one another. Share our wisdom with one another as Teachers for each other. Realize the mission captured by the passage “the people (virtue of parent) there in my land (virtue of sovereign), are happy and at ease (virtue of Teacher).” We should aim for this and usher the period, I will call the “Treasure of the heart” period of humanity. Respectfully, does all these thoughts, make sense? What do you think? emmanuel.matuco@linkedIn.

  9. Great content. Very rightly said, the power has shifted from Employer to employee.

  10. The forced adoption of virtual meetings has actually made it easier to communicate internally across multiple regions and even languages and somewhat flattened the previous hierarchical structures.

  11. Working style will be on-site, wfh and hybrid. How to manage a company in hybrid is the most challenging topic in the future. Company and people should be technically, skills, mentally ready for this trend. Managers and leaders should think about methods to bind team together. There are more details in the talk. Very helpful

  12. Great content! Due to the work from home the performance of some employers is compromissed by other responsabilities and interests. How can we manage to help them to mantain the proficient results?

  13. Really loved the chat. Great clarity.
