Hello and welcome to News Review, the program where we show you how to use the language from the latest news story in your everyday English. I’m Dan and joining me today is Catherine. Hi, Catherine.

    Hi, Dan.

    So, what’s our story?

Our story today Dan is about the effects of tourism.

Ok. Let’s hear more from this BBC world service news bulletin.

“A new study says tourism accounts for 8% of global carbon emissions – about three times more than previously estimated.
The report, published in the journal Nature, includes details on the carbon footprint linked to tourists’ food, shopping and accommodation as well as their travel.”

So, a new report has concluded that the previous estimate on how world carbon is created by tourist and tourism, those estimates were wrong. Now, carbon is really important. Carbon emissions contribute to global warming. Everybody creates carbon when you use any kind of machine in model activities. But tourism is creating probably a lot more. In fact, 8% of global carbon emissions are being caused by tourism. According to this study which is published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Ok. Well. We’ve looked around and found three words that we can use to talk about this story. What have you found for us?

Ok. We have choking, globetrotting and cost the Earth.

Interesting. Ok. How… let’s show our first headline then, please.

Ok. So, we’re going to Joy online, the headline is ‘Tourism is choking the planet’.

Choking, stopping from breathing. What can you tell me about them?

Yes. so, choking, the verb to choke of literal meaning is if you’re eating something and your food gets stuck in your throat and you can swallow it. Yes, never a pleasant experience. And you can’t breath, so you start coughing ah…ah…. And someone will hit you on the back or do a maneuver and the food comes fly. Very dramatic. So, choking is not nice and it means a blocked in your throat. We can then expand the idea of the blocked to talk about other thing can get blocked, pipes, roads if there is a lot of traffic.

Ah. We’ve often heard the roads are choked, in rush hour. Something like that.

    Yes. so, no movement.

    That’s right.

So, we’re looking at the headline, ‘the planet is choking’. And the reason of tourism that the planet can’t breath is what the journal is trying to say.

Ok. There is another way of using choke, isn’t there? When somebody performs badly under pressure.

Yes. It’s you about to get a speech, Dan. And you own prepare. And then you get on stage and you can’t remember what you suppose to say.

Although people are looking at you.

You feel awful. You get it wrong. You embarrassed. The words won’t come out the way you’ve heard them. And we can say that Dan choked.

It’s probably used in the sports and driving when somebody has a really big problem to do, like a free cake, miss a free cake.

Yes, so, a penalty. Yes. It’s a other meaning, the same idea that we can think on moving the way they should.

    “Choking – stopping from breathing
    – It looked like he was choking. Probably because he was eating too fast.
    – Throughout the holiday, the roads were choked with cars.”

Thank you very much. Well. Let’s not choking on our current information, and move on to our second headline, please.

Science News, ‘Globetrotting tourists are leaving a giant carbon footprint on the Earth’.

Globetrotting, travelling frequently worldwide. Now, that’s a very interesting word. What can you tell me about him?

It’s very interesting word. The first thing you should do is break it up into two parts. The first part, globe means the Earth, the world, the planet, our planet. Its shape is round, so that shape is called a globe. Trotting is a verb of movement. If you trot, you move quickly and busily. So, not quite running but you’re moving. You’re on the move a lot. So, globetrotting means moving around the world quickly and frequently. As business travelers, you can also call them globetrotters. So, the noun form is globetrotter. You move around the world a lot. You travel a lot internationally to lots of different places.

Ok. And the base word, globetrotting. Is that an adjective or a noun?

It can be both. So, yes. so, here we have globetrotting tourist that’s used as an adjective. But you can also use the general form globetrotting is the problem in term of the carbon that is produced.

    Very nice, thank you.

    “globetrotting – travelling frequently worldwide
    – The globetrotting basketball team became internationally renowned.
    – Globetrotting is a great life, but it’s hard to start a family.”

Alright, let’s trot along to the third and final headline then.

Ok. Cosmos, ‘your next holiday might cost the Earth’.

Cost the Earth, be very expensive.

Yes. Nothing is more valuable than our planet. Nothing is more expensive than our planet. If you have to pay for something the whole planet, it’s costing quite expensive. So, it’s really nice idiom that we use to say something is very expensive. Especially in term of if it’s affordable for use. So, something might costs years because it’s more money than you have.

Ok. Like a jacket I want to bought. Like a boarding Germany arms. 200 pounds. Which’s just the time. It’s quite a lot for me. It took me a few days to decide then I went back to the shop several times. Because how important the jacket was. But I bought it. And actually I wore it nearly everyday for a year. It became very cost efficient.

So, you got it. you got the jacket.

There is a massive hole in it. I can’t wear it anymore but I can’t get it away. It’s still my favor.

Well. We need a photo Dan.

Do we have any synonym for this?

Yes. Lots of synonym for things being expensive. They can cost the Earth. They can cost a ball. Something can cost a packet. It can cost a meant or it can cost an arm and leg.

Ah. That’s classic phrase. An arm and leg.

    Yes.

“cost the Earth – be very expensive
    – It’s a beautiful dress, it costs the Earth. I certainly can’t afford it.
    – The wedding cost them the Earth, but you can’t put a price on love.”

Alright. so, before we recap our vocabulary, let’s have a quick look at our social media challenge. This morning we posted ‘How much carbon a person generates. Is there carbon…
    a) Handprint
    b) Footprint
    c) Faceprint’
    How did they do Catherine?

Pretty well this time, Dan. Not many people got it wrong. It is of course the carbon footprint which is answer b. So well done to everybody got that right on Facebook on Twister, and on Instagram.

Well done first three and everybody else who participated. Now, can we have a quick recap of our vocabulary, Catherine?

Most definitely. We had choking, stopping from breathing. Globetrotting, travelling frequently worldwide. Cost the Earth, be very expensive.
