2018 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports First Ride Review reviews

When I first laid eyes on the 2018 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports at the Long Beach International Motorcycle Show, I thought to myself, “Dang that’s a nice paint job and I love the white frame, but man, what a long name.” After talking to some Honda reps about the bike’s intended place in the market and in its own line-up, I left the conversation a bit more confused than when I had started. You see, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports is aimed to more directly compete with the bigger adventure motorcycles that publications and consumers alike, were already comparing it to.

The new AT AS would offer longer distance touring capability as well as what would be perceived as more off-road-worthy accoutrements. We have seen other manufacturers take adventure bike platforms and aim one model solely at street performance and the other at more off-road focused duty, so where does the Africa Twin Adventure Sports land? Honda says to think of it more as an “SP” model off sorts, referring to the upgraded CBR1000RR SP.

Calling this "off road" is stretching it. But, if they actually went off road they'd need to swap tires and the bikes probably would have sustained numerous droppings.

I own this bike and I am 5.8' . It was awkward, I dropped it once at low speed parking. I bought the Honda-made low cut seat – it makes NIGHT AND DAY difference. Immediate confidence and manageability. It also gets you a bit lower behind your windscreen – beneficial during highway use. I can't recommend it enough. That beautiful light metallic blue takes the AT paint scheme to the next level – Great bike

My reasons for NOT buying one: No cruise control, Chain drive, and Goofy Paint. 3 Very easy fixes. (Honda are you listening?)

I know it's a dirt focused D/S but it needs a version with tube-less wheels and Cruise . . . chain cleaning and lubing it's already too much.

I really wanted to like this bike and other Adventure Tourers, for what they seem to promise… the perfect bike, ON and OFF Road. I still want one, but I'm downsizing at this point. Because these bikes are selling, "salesmen" like to avoid or gloss over the shortcomings these bikes possess. High-end ADV bikes are HEAVY A F; all of them are pushing 500lbs…Dry. Notice how the kid said he was riding "in the dirt", but he was mostly on improved dirt roads, and the few shots where it look like he was on a trail, it was completely flat and not very challenging. "I dropped it", he exclaims in spite of his neutral terrain choices. I would bet 100 bucks, he needed help picking it up as I've seen in other rider's YT vids; sometimes with as many as 3 other people because of an incline or wet terrain or both. Just be a little cautionary and watch other real rider's vids so you'll know what you're getting into, not just these corporate infomercials. Bottom line, you will definitely have to have at least one other person go with you if you plan to hit even moderate trails with an "All In Wonder" ADV Bike. Peace and Shiny Side Up, Brothers and Sisters…

I've been watching a dozen of these videos from Prescott, AZ on the ATAS for months. Seems like some channels had it out a long time ago, strange to see them keep coming.

Honda, please make a legit mini Africa Twin based off your cbr500 family parallel twin platform. Basically just rework the cb500x to include wire spoked wheels and cheaper off-road suspension bits from your bin and I'll be sooooo happy. The 1000 is just too expensive for me. Please do it soon before I get a Versys 300!

Honda wanted to make this a better tourer, made the bike throttle by wire, and yet decided not to write 2 lines of code and add a 10 dollar switch to enable cruise control???

Why didn't they call it the Africa Twin Adventure Touring so we could just call it the AT-AT?

I wasn't a DCT fan and now that I have the Africa Twin DCT I would never go back to manual. Yes, it does take a good 1000+ miles to get fully adjusted and also learn how to fiddle with the riding modes. Keep the operators manual handy. IMO, you will probably replace and upgrade the stock tires quickly and don't bother with the poor quality Honda panniers. I added a taller after market windscreen and upgraded the foot pegs. Overall, I'm happy as a clam with the bike.

Imagine carrying load and cargo with taller bike and higher center of gravity! What is Honda thinking? Viking riders still be sticking to the bmw.

I like the bike except for no cruise control? Come on Honda don't call it a touring bike and give it all the electronics you could ask for…curious omission.

So would you say the DCT transmission is more or less complex than the manual transmission? … exactly. No need to reinvent the wheel to extract another grand or two from your customers with superfluous tech.
