  1. Harry Melling was mesmerising in the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Mark Kermode is right. Toby Jones also an incredible actor and Bale never puts a bad performance in.

  2. This is why I keep checking on what new films are being released, as for a while I gave up with the saturation of superhero films, saying out loud ‘not another one surely’. I like films set back in history, no technology like it is today, that actually takes attention away from the story. Bale really caught my attention in ‘Hostiles’, hope he makes more films set in an earlier era. I’m pretty much a Sherlock Holmes fan and like Victorian-type settings, so this film really appeals to myself

  3. I'm glad that I've seen this review as I wouldn't have bothered with Christian Bale at the top of the cast; but this looks like a great cast and tale.

  4. Your comment about foreign actors doing better in American roles than Americans. I’m American and I fully agree lol

  5. I only wish Netflix released this over Christmas.

  6. British actors work for cheaper than American ones, "white mexicans"

  7. Also Michael Fassbender & Dan Sevens are brits playing us americans more convincingly

  8. Gillian Anderson speaks naturally in British and American English, it's amazing to watch her switch. But then I have one friend who has a French mother, and Scottish father and switches both tongues and accents automatically, as does another English/Spanish friend.

  9. Gillian Anderson is so good. I wish she did more movies.

  10. Actually all those British actors are only convincing Americans to other Brits. Melling in particular looks nothing like the real Edgar Allen Poe. But Gillian Anderson, who is American, born in Chicago, apparently put some British actor out of work since she played Margaret Thatcher!

  12. I love most of Scott Cooper's films, really hoping this is good. Especially after the incredibly disappointing Antlers.

  13. This movie is up there with Arthur 2 On The Rocks, casted of Dudley Moore

  14. I like Scott Cooper more than most and this subject matter + Bale in the lead sounds like a real good time imo

  15. Scott cooper and christian bale are such a good combo.

  16. …and Poe is often considered one of the originators of the detective fiction genre.
That Pale Blue Eye is winking.

  17. This has my interest. Happy to hear Mark and Simon enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be watching this.

  18. "…Oh I see, I thought you were implying she was demonic."
    "No no no no!"
Like, Marker Mode was terrified at thought of being sued for slander by Gillian Anderson's legal team, or being cursed by her coven.

  19. Harry Melling is OUTSTANDING as Poe, but the film that surrounds him is an absolute bore.

  20. Looking forward to this, I shall save it for a frosty day!

  21. Patrck Troughton is from a period of Doctor Who I really like (1963 up to 1980). The early years is my favorite time in the Doctor Who series with Tom Baker being my favorite in the lead. The connection with the second Doctor actor just makes this movie all the cooler for me. I look forward to this horror mystery with an Edgar A. Poe angle to it. Toby Joness? Gillian Anderson? Timothy Spall? Christian Bale? It's like a Christmas horror funfest for me.

  22. I'm looking forward to this one.

  23. Great to see Harry Melling getting a chance to shine. He was devastating in Buster Scruggs. Can't wait to see him in this. Christian Bale? Meh.

Haven't seen it yet, but does this movie seem rather similar in plot to the recent Poe mashup Raven's Hollow, which starred William Moseley, another underrated alumni of 2000s children's fantasy?
