KTER Scoping Review: Jobs-related social communications skills of adults with ASD 2022

November 11, 2022

The KTER Center recently developed two scoping reviews related to pre-employment transition services for students with disabilities, and job-related social communication skills of adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The research these reviews identified can inform vocational rehabilitation (VR) services to help clients succeed in getting jobs and keeping them. Tune in to these short, on-demand webcasts to hear the scoping reviews’ findings, methods, and implications for practice.

The objective of this scoping review was to identify interventions that have been successful in helping people with ASD achieve optimal employment outcomes through developing and applying evidence-based strategies to improve social and communication skills. We focused especially on studies of strategies that can be applied by VR counselors and employment specialists who work with people with autism. The scoping review identified four kinds of promising strategies to help adults with ASD, including interviewing skills, on-the-job social skills training, self-advocacy, and compensatory strategies to aid learning on the job.
