October 23, 2022

David Beckham’s emails have been hacked. The people who did it wanted him to pay them to keep quiet. Neil and Catherine look at the language the world’s media is using to discuss this story – and show you how you can use it in your everyday English.

Key words and phrases:

the act of making private information known to the public

get money from someone by threatening to reveal their secrets

extreme anger

This is a natural, unscripted programme so we don’t provide a transcript or subtitles. For more details and an exercise, visit our website:

It is really helpful for none native speaker.

  4. Your videos are the most helpful thing for improving listening skills!👍🏼👍🏼But I can't understand why news review from BBC learning English is mush more understandable for me than 6 minutes English. Does it depend on speaker's speech or maybe because I can see speakers and just like read from their lips?😂

This is well done, although I think you should consider uploading subtitles for future videos as it would help learners check their understanding of what is being said.

  17. Hey Nail it's great to see you. I am hearing your podcast but for the first time I see ya👍👍

  19. Hello!
    Here (5m11s)
Neil says: "They wanted a certain amount of money not to reveal the contents …"
Can one express the same in another way: "They wanted a certain amount of money for not revealing…"?
Could you kindly explain the difference between these two, if yes?

  20. First time listening to BBC, really like this, but it would be better if subtitles 😀
