  11. Hello welcome to News review the program we give you the word and phrases
you need to talk about the News.

Hi Im Neil, with me today is Catherine today, Hi there?
    Hello.
    what's today's story?

today's story comes to us from world of nature,
there is some good News , also some bad News.

Ok, let's find out more about that from this world service News bulletine
    =================================================
    News listening
    =================================================

Ok, so we have had a story where two thousand of new types of plants have been discovered around world just in one year
    sounds like great story.

but unfortunately it's not all good News because 20% of plants ( ) are in a danger of dying out completely.

Ok, Im not much good at math but I can tell that is not good ( ).
it must be a lot more plants dying out than they're discovering.

Im pretty sure you're right about that.
of course, this plants are new they've always been there
we just didn't have names of them.

and you've been ( ) into the story a little bit more.
and finding some words and phrases that is being used to talk about it.
    what are they?

they are "habitat", "at risk of", and "kill off".

    Ok, some definition's here
habitat, those of places where plants and animals live naturally.

at risk of, in a situation where something bad or dangerous could happen.

and kill off, meaning distroy something tatally.

so, how are those being used in there, Headlines?

they're being used in across a lot of Headlines.
I've picked out three for us today.

we have the New science website who carries Headline,
A fifth of all plants threatened as habitats shrink worldwide.

Ok, the word habitat is already defined as a place where animals and plants live naturally,
could I say, after work today, Im gonna go back to the south London to my habitat?

not really, it is a short answer to that.
habitat is usually used , meaning that natural place , animals , plants always live, out in the wild there,
so house isn't really habitat ,
you can say jokingly , maybe your habitat is ( )

    I don't know what you're saying.

but generally speaking, it's a natural habitat,
so elephant's natural habitat is not the zoo, not circus
natural habitat is the outside africa or india or south asian environment
    they naturally live in.

and the important thing as a habitat is that
if you loose that habitat , the animals ( ), they need to stay in the natural

here ( ) in the report to habitat loss and that means
if they don't have somewhere to live , they will die,
    unless they adopt.

ok next, next ( ) you've got there?

we have "at risk of" and on ABC News we have.
State of the World's Plants: One in five of the world's plants
at risk of extinction, kew botanists say.

so, the word risk is quite common word , it means danger potential danger.
when we have the phrase "at risk of"
that's really useful because it helps to join thing that's in danger
to the possible result of the danger.

so, plants at risk of extinction. so it's joining the thing and the possible result with this phrase "at risk of"

and a further example , the workers were at risk of redundancy.

absoluteley yes, you can use it ,to join,
it doesn't have to be plants , it can be any danger
and if you go into an electrical power station,
    you're at risk of ( ).

and it's always useful to learn more than just a word , the words around it.
    set phrase.

    absolutely yes.
you've got a lot of power out of set phrases

    ok,next.

yes, we have "kill off" and this one is an another really useful phrase
we have in the TIME website
Human behaviour threathens to kill off a fifth of all plants.

now the kill as you know, the general meaning of kill is
make something die , make someting dead
when you add proposition "off" , it changes meaning slightly

and it becomes you're not killing one or a few something,
    you're killing all of them.
    so it doesn't exist anymore.

and a very useful example of how phasal verb is different to just that base verb.

absolutely, in this case it changes meaning , to mean kill off totally
example would be the famous bird ( ),

    ( ) was killed off.

in ( ), if you're hundred years ago, by the explores, killed all of them.
    so they were killed off.

    so they became extinctive.

ok, we've got a little bit more about this story from the ( ), Steve Bachman

    ===========================================
    News listening

we have a huge demand of food,
so, there's a lot amount of food that's growing
    and we need lands.
so basically natural habitats have been converted
so that we have soy plantations, crops, live stock.
as a result , that's really causing species to loose their habitats
and to get close toward extinction.

    ===========================================

now, it's time for our FaceBook challenge.

    Thanks bbcle. Finn, and Catherine.
    every in the world ,
    have a lovely day.

  12. Thanks a lot .

  13. How can you discover a plant or a speeches when it has been around before humans existed? You've only got to know about their existence.

  14. Awesome video! I like it
